Projects & Assignments
CJMC follows the experiential learning system and students are encouraged to work on several projects of their choice to create a winning portfolio.
- CJMC CHRONICLE: The college e-newspaper, CJMC Chronicle is a jewel in the CJMC crown. It has grown to be a much-loved and admired newspaper for the students, by the students. This provides a unique opportunity where students learn all aspects of journalism, from reporting, editing, interviewing and e-newspaper production.
- DSU Pulse: The quarterly newsletter of the university, this prestigious publication gives an opportunity to select journalism students to report, edit and design the newsletter, under the guidance of a faculty member, and showcase their skills to a larger university audience.
- TELEVISION NEWS STORIES (South Matters): The students produce TV news stories by selecting impactful stories, writing the script, shooting and editing the footage, creating anchor shots and P2C. They compile them into news capsules for the YouTube channel CJMC South Matters.
- RADIO FEATURE: The students have to produce a podcast, radio documentary or feature as part of their coursework.
- SHORT FILM: The students produce a 10-minute short fiction film which helps them to learn the intricacies of story-ideating, script-writing, production, acting, BGM, final production and packaging. The film may be shot on mobile phone too.
- DOCUMENTARY FILM: Students highlight social anomalies through their documentaries as a part of the development communication/documentary filmmaking course. These documentaries could be on child labour, prostitution, disability, mental health, hygiene and cleanliness, community communication and civic matters.
- CHAT SHOW: Interviewing a celebrity, a newsmaker, or a change-agent can be quite an experience, starting with doing in-depth research and coming up with pointed questions, gives journalism students a professional high!
- CORPORATE FILM: A 3-minute corporate film on a company highlighting the company’s area of activities, its products/services, its achievements and its vision is an excellent cross-functional learning opportunity, where PR and filmmaking meet.
- PHOTO-FEATURE: The students produce a photo-feature on a theme given to them, as a part of their photography classes, complete with audio and graphics design, and present in class.
- AD/BRAND FILM: Students will produce an ad/brand campaign – a television commercial, a print advertisement and a digital advertisement for a product or service.
- IMC PITCH: Students have to pitch an IMC strategy for a product or service given to them. The IMC Pitch is real-time and is evaluated by senior advertising and public relations professionals. It involves presenting a strategy, creating a brand and showcasing their creative talent. It also involves presenting a media brief, strategy, and showcasing their writing-for-the-press talent.
- DIGITAL MEDIA PITCH: Students have to set up a new ‘digital business’ and pitch for seed money. The DMM Pitch is real-time and tests the entrepreneurial skills of the students. It involves presenting a marketing, consumer and digital and social media strategy.
- RESEARCH SURVEY: A live market research survey is carried out and results presented using complete statistical tools and techniques as a part of their psychology course.
- FIELD VISITS: The students are taken on field visits for firsthand experience in live reporting and video journalism. Journalism students have to compulsorily visit the Bangalore Press Club.
- THEATRE PRODUCTION: The students work on a short theatre production as a part of their course, after intensive workshops, play reading and acting sessions.
- GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS PROJECT: Globcom is a multidimensional and multicultural global communications project involving 13 universities in 13 countries across 5 continents where the students collaborate to develop a competitive global proposal. The students get an opportunity to attend the Global Communications Conference at one of the member-countries at the end of their project.
