Problem Solving Competition through TRIZ held at SCMS for MBA Students
School of Commerce & Management Studies, Dayananda Sagar University organized a problem solving competition using TRIZ methodology under the guidance of Dean- School of Commerce and Management Studies, Captain A. Nagaraj Subbarao, PhD for MBA 3rd Semester students. In total, 8 teams participated for the Problem Solving Competition finale on 29-Nov and top 3 teams were awarded with the certificates.
TRIZ is Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. TRIZ is a system for creative thought, which has grown to include applications to management sciences, education, business, marketing, etc. It includes methods for forecasting the future development of technologies, uncovering the causes of past issues as well as identifying and eliminating potential causes for would-be issues.
For example Bicycle Chain is a separation between a whole System and its Parts. A bicycle chain must be flexible to traverse a loop and rigid to accept high loads from the pedals. The solution, a chain of links, is rigid on the small scale but flexible on the large scale.
Learning Outcome
The students understood about the TRIZ methodology, which consisted of following steps, to work on the Problem identified and arrive at the solution.
- Describe the Problem: Clearly define the problem in detail, considering its unique perspective.
- Define Constraints: Identify both controllable and uncontrollable aspects of the problem.
- Ideal Final Result (IFR): Establish the ideal outcome, free from limitations.
- Trade-offs and Barriers: Analyze the trade-offs and barriers that prevent achieving the IFR.
- Find Solutions: Utilize TRIZ principles and tools to identify potential solutions.

National Entrepreneurship Network
The School of Commerce & Management Studies has associated with the National Entrepreneurship Network a well-recognized body supported by the Wadhwani Foundation, to offer our students immersive Entrepreneurship courses. The NEN Trust was setup in 2008 to play the critical role of establishing an entrepreneurship ecosystem in a large number of tier 1 and 2 academic campuses across India. The goal was to enable young people on campuses to ‘do’ entrepreneurship while still on campus so that they could actively build aspiration, skills, confidence and networks which would increase their chances of starting new ventures successfully sooner rather than later upon graduation.
The initiative will happen through our recently established COPE - Entrepreneurship, managed by Prof Jitendranath Patri.
Entrepreneurship is a pillar that the school has adopted, and we want to persuade students to follow a path of entrepreneurship and develop an entrepreneurial mindset. Entrepreneurship is specially emphasised in the BBA program as a differentiator. We are very excited by this association.

Human Resource Excellence
Students from MBA 2023, Semester III attended a four day workshop on HR Excellence at Bengaluru in February 2025.
The program was organised by Ribon Gum, Bengaluru and was designed for HR professionals with 2–6 years of experience that aims to provide insights into core HR functions and advanced concepts.

MBA | Semester III | HR Specialization, January 07 to January 11, 2025
The HR Analytics Workshop conducted by Prof. Aravind Narasipur at DSU was an insightful and interactive session focusing on critical statistical tools and their applications in HR decision-making. The workshop aimed to equip students with practical skills in analyzing and interpreting data using Excel, with a particular emphasis on simple regression, multiple regression, and measures of central tendency. It was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and its real-world application in human resource analytics.
Building on this, the workshop delved into multiple regression, where Prof. Aravind explained how to analyze relationships involving more than two variables. For instance, he demonstrated how factors such as education, years of experience, and job role can collectively influence employee turnover rates. Students learned to use Excel’s data analysis tool to run multiple regression analyses, interpret coefficients, and evaluate the model's significance. This hands-on approach enabled them to understand the complexities of handling multifactorial datasets commonly encountered in HR analytics.
Another key aspect of the workshop was the focus on measures of central tendency—mean, median, and mode. Mr. Aravind Narasipur emphasized their importance in summarizing HR data, such as salaries, employee performance scores, and satisfaction ratings. He demonstrated practical ways to calculate and interpret these measures using Excel, helping students recognize patterns and draw actionable insights from large datasets.

COPE – Entrepreneurship at SCMS (PG): Sparking Ideas, Fuelling Futures
Entrepreneurship is not just a buzzword at the School of Commerce & Management Studies (SCMS–PG). It is one of the six strategic pillars and arguably the most transformative. Recognising entrepreneurs' pivotal role in shaping economies and societies, the SCMS (PG) launched the Centre of Proficiency Enhancement (COPE) in Entrepreneurship in September 2023 — a bold step toward inspiring a new generation of innovators, disruptors, and job creators.
At COPE, we do not just talk about startups—we aim to build the mindset. The objective is clear: to spark curiosity, engage students in entrepreneurial action, and instil the belief that bold ideas backed by execution can shape the future. Over time, COPE has become a vibrant platform where inspiration meets initiative.
Among the many impactful initiatives:
- Regular talks by startup icons like K. Ganesh and Arjun Malhotra, who didn’t just speak — they inspired.
- The Business Plan Competition 2025 invited participation from eight leading MBA institutes across Bangalore, attracting 15 highly competitive teams. The competition will continue to get bigger and better
- The Startup Conclave 2024 brought together seasoned founders, investors, and mentors who shared their journeys, failures, and visions for India's startup ecosystem.
- In January 2024, COPE partnered with the Wadhwani Foundation’s National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN). After successfully guiding its first cohort through a rigorous 15-week program, preparations for Cohort 2 are underway.
- Another exciting initiative was the launch of the Startup Spark newsletter, a fortnightly publication that curates key developments, trends, and insights from the startup world. Having recently completed its 25th issue, Startup Spark will continue to keep students informed, inspired, and engaged.
These are just some of the milestones. As a student-led interactive platform, COPE will continue to build an ecosystem that nurtures the entrepreneurial spirit, instils critical thinking, and prepares students to be innovators and leaders in a dynamic global economy.
At Dayanand Sagar University’s SCMS (PG), the future isn’t being waited on through COPE Entrepreneurship—it’s being built.

Entrepreneurship: A key Pillar at SCMS
At SCMS we take our role of creating an entrepreneurial mindset in our students very seriously. Kruthika Gowda and Ashish, have a startup that creates bespoke stationery, in a multitude of variations. They are Executive MBA (T 3) students who have full-time jobs but still find time to pursue an alternative passion.
An entrepreneurial mindset is crucial in today's dynamic world, transcending the realm of business to influence various aspects of life. It embodies qualities like creativity, resilience, and a willingness to take calculated risks. Such a mindset fosters innovation and problem-solving, enabling individuals to adapt to rapidly changing environments. Entrepreneurs see challenges as opportunities, driving them to think outside conventional boundaries and find inventive solutions. In professional settings, this mindset enhances leadership, as entrepreneurs embrace uncertainty and turn setbacks into learning experiences. Moreover, an entrepreneurial mindset nurtures a proactive approach, encouraging individuals to identify and capitalize on emerging trends. Whether in business, education, or personal development, cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset empowers individuals to navigate complexities, envision possibilities, and contribute to positive change in an ever-evolving world.
