Dr. Pradipta Banerjee
Assistant Professor
Dr. Pradipta Banerjee is working as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Basic and Applied Sciences. He is GATE qualified and has completed his doctoral studies from VIT University with funding from SERB-DST, Government of India. His doctoral thesis includes isolation and identification of an elusive class of biomolecules termed as cryptic peptides, a group of hidden peptides with potential therapeutic properties which stays dormant within structural proteins of the body and acts as physiological regulators upon excision. He has isolated several cryptic peptides with blood pressure regulatory, oxidative load reducing, cell adhesive, cell proliferative, apoptotic, bone nucleating and chelating properties with mechanistic evaluation of the physiological action. He has extensive experience in purification of biomolecules through chromatographic techniques including ion-exchange, gel permeation, hydrophobic, affinity, metal-chelation and poly-dT columns. His other expertise includes enzyme kinetics, enzyme modeling, biomimetic bone growth, mammalian cell culture along with in-vitro and in-vivo wound healing studies in fibroblast and mice model.
He has 16 research publications to his credit, in Thomson-Reuters indexed, peer- reviewed, international journals with a cumulative impact factor of 18.44, with 140 citations and h-index of 7 till February 2019. He is recipient of the ARP award from the Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka and has secured grants from Indian Academy of Sciences to create science awareness in general population. He has undergone industrial training on HPLC, FPLC, NMR, FTIR and AFM handling and till date, has participated in multiple faculty Development Programs. He has worked in collaborative projects with the Tannery Division in Central Leather Research Institute in isolating therapeutic peptides from leather waste and has also collaborated with Center for Functional Genomics, Madurai Kamaraj University for better 2-D resolution of peptides. He is the reviewer for eminent journals like Process Biochemistry, Food Biochemistry, Bioinspired & Biomimetics and Current Science.
Dr. Pradipta Banerjee is the principal investigator for three major projects amounting to a total of Rs. 89 lakhs, funded by DST-SERB, DST-INSPIRE and Vision Group on Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka. His research team is focusing on isolation and mechanistic evaluation of therapeutic and biomimetic peptides isolated from protein-rich waste. His research group has won twelve Best Oral Presentation awards along with seven Best poster awards at various National and International Conferences.
