National Seminar on New Education Policy 2019

Prof. Nagaraj Subbarao, Dean –EE, was invited as a resource person for the national seminar on the New Education Policy 2019, as enunciated by the MHRD, Government of India hosted by the Vivekananda Law College, Puttur, Karnataka on November 23, 2019.
He spoke on Higher Education in India. India's higher education system is the third largest in the world, next to the United States and China. India is believed to have had a functioning system of higher education as early as 1000 B.C.. However our Gross Enrolment Ratio for higher education is still exceedingly low as compared to developed nations.
The University Grants Commission has set a target to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 30 per cent by 2020 from the present 25.4 per cent and 50% by the year 2030. In the USA the GER is about 80% and China about 45%.
Professor Nagaraj Subbarao was of the opinion that for these ambitious targets to be achieved India needs innovative interventions in the form of the use of digital technology and online education. He also spoke on the challenges that online education faces and critical aspects that need mitigation.
