Till 2021, Dr. Sharatkumar Variyar led the Continuous Improvement and Technical Training for Engineering at Collins India, a division of Raytheon Technologies Corporation, where he worked for close to 9 years. The Aerospace systems supported included nacelles, thrust reversers, exhaust casings, aircraft seating, lighting, evacuation, cargo-handling, landing and actuation systems, motors and controllers, sensors, fuel systems, air management systems, generators and power distribution systems, regional and military avionics, cockpit display systems, flight management, flight controls and communication systems.
He also held additional responsibilities in Ergonomics, Ethics and Compliance for the engineering and manufacturing divisions of Collins India.
As Competency Development Head for Quest Global, where he worked for over 13 years, he supported global majors such as General Electric, EADS (Airbus), United Technologies Corporation, Rolls Royce PLC, and Toshiba.
Dr. Sharatkumar developed and delivered cutting edge industry-oriented engineering curricula and faculty development courses for NASSCOM in collaboration with Anna University and other industry partners.
He has designed and delivered multiple technical trainings on Aircraft Engines, Turbomachines, Product Development, Lean Tools, Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Finite Element Analysis etc.
His areas of interest include:
Finite element methods, Design of Experiments, Thermo-elasto-plasticity, Welding residual stresses and distortions, Systematic innovation including design thinking and functional innovation, systems engineering, lean concepts including 5S, standard work, quality control, root-cause investigations and policy deployment, Agile and Six-Sigma methodologies, Industrial Ergonomics, e-learning and instructional design.
Commercial aircraft systems design - balancing performance, weight, space, power and communication budgets within timelines and cost targets, and compliance to standards/ guidelines such as DO178C, DO254, ARP4754A, ARP4761, DO160 and Reach.
He completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Madras, Chennai and M.Tech in the area of Thermal Turbomachines, from Mechanical Engineering Department, IIT Madras, Chennai. He did his B.Tech with Honours in Mechanical Engineering from Calicut University.
Dr. Sharatkumar acted as reviewer for papers for NAFEMS India. He reviewed and provided feedback, from private sector perspective, to National Skill Development Agency, as required by Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India, for qualification packs for aviation job roles, prepared by Aerospace and Aviation Sectoral Skills Council.
He has published one paper in an international journal and made presentations at international and national conferences.
