Overview:
The School of Basic and Applied Sciences (SBAS) of Dayananda Sagar University (DSU) offers M.Sc. program in Biotechnology. This program creates globally challenging environment and allows students to achieve excellence in academia and research.
Eligibility M.Sc. Biotechnology:
B.Sc. with any of the following subjects in Life Science such as Biotechnology, Microbiology, Genetics, Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, etc.
Program Included:
The two-year Master degree having choice-based credit system and provides a unified curriculum with specialized areas comprising: Advanced Cell Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Plant Tissue Culture, Animal Tissue Culture, Industrial Biotechnology besides Molecular Genetics, General Microbiology and soft core areas viz., Bioinformatics (Genomics and Proteomics), Biostatistics, Clinical Research, Evolution & Developmental Biology and Scientific Writing.
Final year students will take up Project/Dissertation work in different premium Research Institutes, Biotech Pvt. Companies and in University departments. Students will be introduced to different components of Research Methodology.
Subsequently the following frontier areas of research will be focused to carry out student dissertation work which includes:
PHYTOCHEMICALS: Extraction from plants and check its activity/efficacy as antifungal, anti-atherosclerosis, anti-bacterial, anti-cancer, etc; EXTREMOPHILES- Isolation and characterization of microorganisms and their metabolites which can have biotechnological research and industrial uses; BIODIESEL production; IMMUNODULATORY activities of important lead molecules; PATHOGEN: Molecular characterization of clinically important bacterial pathogens; Genomics to understand pathogen makeup and mechanism of drug resistance.
Program also provide platforms for Summer Internship, Certificate Courses, extracurricular activities such as sports, cultural and community activities.
Scope and job opportunities:
With the growing demand of Biotechnology in different fields (Agriculture, Animal and Human health Care, Medicine, Diagnostics, Industry etc.), the outgoing students will be preferred for suitable opportunities in different interdisciplinary areas. The program is intended to give flexible career options to students who can be competent to acquire relevant positions in production, R&D, QA/QC, Diagnostic, regulatory affairs, Clinical research, Scientific or technical writing in relevant biotechnology companies in areas of health care (medical), agriculture, food industry companies, pharmaceutical and nutraceuticals.
Students will be competent to take up doctoral studies in premium research institutions both in India and abroad. The program will help the students to appear for National and State Level Exams (CSIR-NET, ICMR/ICAR NET, GATE and SET etc) making them eligible for JRF and Lectureship. The first rank holder of the 2 years program will specifically be eligible to apply for DST INSPIRE (Innovation in Scientific Pursuit for Inspired Research) Fellowship for Doctoral Programmes in Science and Tech by Department of Science and Technology -Govt. of India.
